Where Have You Been (Joey Meeks Remix)

This is my first release of a remix that I created myself. Now, don't get it twisted. I do not consider myself an audio producer, but an audio editor. There are things that I can hear that a lot of others can't, like the patterns of a track and a chord progression of another track, and what it could sound like together. It's hard to explain but easier to present.

With my background as an editor, I know how to combine and create such sound. I use my DJ software to brainstorm (Serato DJ Pro) and develop the idea, and then I move to my DAW program of choice (Adobe Audition) to assemble everything together.

Does that take away from the artistry, not creating everything from scratch? Absolutely fucking not.

I think there's a stigma for those who are creative, who are trying whatever they can do, to have to the basic fundamentals of what a musician does to make music. That's simply not true. You do need the knowledge of how to compose a song, and the ear for such patterns.

However, nothing - and I mean NOTHING, should ever stop you from putting out something great that you've made and you're proud of. I do have around seven other tracks I have yet to release, ones that I have written and composed myself over the years, but this one, made in a DJ-esque way in a DJ-saturated era, felt like the right one and the right time to show the world.

Soundcloud sucks. It's described as a platform for small artists to create a name for themselves, but if there is a lick of copyrighted material, immediately your art is removed from the platform. That's the issue I have dealt with trying to uploaded my track to the platform. If you were to lie about having the rights to said track, they can delete your channel. It's bullshit. I get that there are laws, rights, and rules, but they are doing it wrong and losing money doing so.

YouTube is the superior platform. YouTube allows you to upload your tracks without deletion, as it scans for those right-holders and sends whatever monetization money you would've made to the label directly. As of right now, that's completely fine with me. It works. All I want is the ability to get my art out there so others can view, listen, and enjoy. It's not too much to ask for.

This is the first of two tracks I have slated for a release. This was the second track that I made but the first one I decided to release because of the familiarity aspect. When people know the original track and the chorus by heart, you can alter the rest. Their familiarity can decided how good your remix is because they have something to reference. That is key for any DJ trying to make a name for themselves.

My other track, which will be released in the summer (alongside with a music video) is my favorite thing that I have created. It encapsulates me, the sound that I gravitate to, and the feeling it omits of who I am and what I love the most - and I want the video to show that as best as humanly possible.
